O.O. Blog

I thought for the inaugural O.O. weblog entry I would tell a funny story.  I got the privilege of spending every waking moment working with Senator Obama in Boston during the DNC convention week in ’04. Needless to say we were very busy for 4 days straight–going from tv news appearances, to photo shoots to fundraisers all over Boston and all over the Fleet Center—starting at 7:00 in the morning and stumbling back to the hotel at 2 or 3 am each day.    One of these mornings, we were recording a Meet the Press interview with Tim Russert in one of the sky boxes and we were running late for another interview on the floor of the arena.  At this point, I was photographing, but I was also Barack’s assistant and I mentioned that we were late for our next interview.  Without skipping a beat, Senator Obama jumped out the front side of the sky box, leapt from seat to seat before making his way to the aisle and then down onto the floor of the arena.  I followed suit, but didn’t’ have as much luck.  I had about 30 pounds of camera gear around my shoulders and I have rather large feet.  The large feet are important because when you step on a folding chair coming out of a sky box be sure to step on the front part. I missed the front part and my foot got stuck in the folding chair for about 3 minutes.  The Senator was already finished with his next interview by the time I finally made it to the floor.  The good news is I had my telephoto lens and was able to get some good shots from the cheap seats.  David Katz
